Claude Skills: What They Are and How to Create Skills for Your Company

A Claude Skill is a folder with instructions, files and, when needed, scripts, which Claude loads only when the task requires it. It lets Claude work with your company's processes and formats (the proposal template, the report format, the discount rules) without anyone having to write the same prompt every time.
Skills work in the Claude apps (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise), in Claude Code and in the API. Since December 2025 they have been an open standard, and on Team and Enterprise they can be published for the whole organization. Source: Anthropic.
What a Skill looks like inside
Each Skill is a folder with a
SKILL.md file. At the top it has a name and a description (which is what Claude uses to decide when to use it) and below that, the instructions. It can include supporting files, such as a template or a price spreadsheet. Example:---

What makes a good Skill:
- A description that says when to use it. If the description is vague, Claude will not activate it at the right moment.
- Concrete instructions. Business steps and rules, not general advice.
- Real files. The template and price list the team actually uses, kept up to date.
- One process per Skill. Three small Skills are better than one that tries to do everything.
How to create a Skill
There are three ways, depending on who builds it:
- From the Claude app, no code: the skill-creator Skill asks you about the process, builds the folder, writes the SKILL.md and packages the files.
- In Claude Code: a project's Skills go in
.claude/skills/and are shared with the team through version control. - Via API: they are created and versioned from the Claude Console or the
/v1/skillsendpoint.
Skills worth building first in a company
Anthropic already includes Skills for working with Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF. The ones that add the most value are each department's own:
- Sales: sales proposal with template and current prices.
- Marketing: weekly client report with the agency's format and metrics.
- Customer support: replies in the brand's tone and following the exchange and return policies.
- Administration: reconciling receipts against the bank statement.
- IT: coding conventions and review checklist for Claude Code.

How to publish Skills for the whole organization
On Team and Enterprise, an administrator has to enable Skills for the organization and can decide which ones are available to everyone. Since a Skill can run code, use only your own Skills or Skills from trusted sources. If you also connect Claude to your systems with MCP, Skills can work with real data.

- What is a Claude Skill? A folder with instructions, files and optional scripts that Claude loads automatically when the task requires it.
- What is the difference between a Skill and a prompt? A prompt is written every time. A Skill is saved, shared with the team and Claude uses it on its own when it applies.
- Do I need to know how to code to create a Skill? No. The skill-creator Skill builds it with you from the app. Code is only needed if the Skill runs scripts.
- Are Skills available on all plans? They are available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise the administrator enables them for the organization.
- Do Skills work in Claude Code? Yes. They are stored in the project's .claude/skills/ folder or in your personal folder, or installed with plugins.
