Is selling on Mercado Libre profitable? How to calculate your real margin and when to add your own store

You sell every day, your reputation is green, and still the numbers do not add up at the end of the month. Is selling on Mercado Libre profitable? It can be, but the only way to know is to calculate how much you keep per product after every fee, not just the commission. In this guide you will see what Mercado Libre charges on each sale, how to work out your real margin, what that calculation leaves out and when it makes sense to add your own channel without shutting down the one that already works.

The short answer

Selling on Mercado Libre is profitable when each product's margin covers the selling fee, the shipping you absorb, installments, advertising and taxes, and still leaves a profit. With a thin gross margin, a low ticket or heavy price competition, you are probably moving volume without making money.

But there is a second question the calculator does not answer: what happens to your business if the conditions change tomorrow? That is where your own channel becomes valuable.

What Mercado Libre charges on each sale

Costs vary by category, listing type, price and even province. That is why we do not give you percentages that may be outdated: the valid reference is the official page on selling costs and the breakdown of each sale in your account. These are the items involved:

  • Selling fee: a percentage of the price that depends on the category and listing type (classic or premium).
  • Fixed fee per unit: added to products below a certain price. It hits low tickets the hardest.
  • Shipping: depending on price and method, part or all of the shipping cost may be on you.
  • Interest-free installments: if you offer them, you pay the financing cost.
  • Advertising (Mercado Ads): if you need ads to move your listings, it is one more cost per sale.
  • Taxes and withholdings: gross income tax, collections and withholdings depending on your tax situation. Your accountant needs to review this.
  • Returns and claims: return shipping and products that cannot be resold.

One fact shows why you need to review the numbers often: since July 2025 Mercado Libre applies different commissions by province, as reported by iProfesional citing an analysis by Idesa. The same product can leave you a different margin depending on where you are registered.

How to calculate your real margin per product

The formula is simple. The hard part is not forgetting any item:

Real margin = sale price - product cost - selling fee - fixed fee per unit - shipping you pay - installment cost - advertising per sale - taxes - cost of returns

Do it product by product, not with averages. An example with round numbers to show how it works (these are assumptions, not Mercado Libre rates):

ItemExampleWhere the real figure comes from
Sale priceARS 50,000Your listing
Product costARS 22,000Your supplier or manufacturing cost
Selling feeARS 7,500Sale breakdown in your account
Shipping you payARS 4,000Sale breakdown
Interest-free installmentsARS 3,000Listing settings
Advertising per saleARS 2,500Mercado Ads spend divided by attributed sales
Taxes and withholdingsARS 3,500Your accountant
Real marginARS 7,500 (15%)

If the selling fee goes up tomorrow or you need more advertising to hold your ranking, that margin shrinks without anything changing on your side. And if your products come out close to zero, the problem is not selling more: it is which products you sell there and at what price.

What the calculation does not show: the customer is not yours

Margin is half the analysis. On Mercado Libre, the relationship with the buyer is managed by the platform. Its listing policies forbid inserting personal information or any form of contact in the description, images, questions and answers or username, and they define contact information as email, phone number, address and URLs or websites. They also forbid links to pages meant for selling outside the platform.

In practice, that means three things:

  1. You cannot take your Mercado Libre buyers to your store. Trying can lead to sanctions on your account.
  2. Every repeat purchase pays commission again. A customer who bought from you ten times cost you ten selling fees.
  3. Your reputation does not move. It belongs to the account, not to your brand.

That is why your own channel is not built by "moving" marketplace customers, but by winning your own from outside: your store, your social media, your ads, your WhatsApp and your email list.

Your own store: what it really costs

An own store has no per-unit selling fee, but it has other costs. Taking Tiendanube as a reference, its official plans and pricing page (checked on November 7, 2026) lists plans from a free starter plan up to ARS 27,999, 79,999 and 244,999 per month on monthly billing. If you get paid through Pago Nube, Tiendanube charges no transaction fee, but the payment method charges a release fee starting between 2.65% and 2.99% plus VAT depending on the plan. With other payment methods, the transaction fee ranges from 0.7% to 2% depending on the plan.

The real cost of an own store is acquiring traffic. So the decision is not "Mercado Libre or store", but how to add the store with a system that brings visits and gets past buyers to come back.

When it makes sense to add your own store

These signals mean it is time:

  • More than half of your revenue depends on Mercado Libre.
  • You have products with a good margin that you could sell at a better price elsewhere.
  • Your customers buy again (consumables, spare parts, refills, collections).
  • Your brand already has its own Google searches or social media followers.
  • You want to sell to wholesalers or companies, something the marketplace does not handle well.

If two or more apply, the risk of not having your own channel is greater than the cost of building it.

How to add your own channel without shutting down Mercado Libre: a 90-day plan

Month 1: foundation. An online store with your best-margin products, payments and shipping sorted, tracking set up (GA4, Meta pixel, Google Ads conversions) and an email capture form. Prices do not have to be the same on both channels if the costs are not.

Month 2: traffic. Search campaigns for your brand and star products, catalog campaigns on Meta and product pages optimized for SEO. The goal is to know what each own sale costs compared with what it costs you on the marketplace.

Month 3: repeat purchases. Turn on your email marketing for ecommerce flows (welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase) and WhatsApp support with a chatbot that answers and hands off. This is where your own channel starts paying off: every returning customer pays no commission. If you have not chosen your store plan yet, see which one fits your volume.

Mercado Libre remains your acquisition channel. The store becomes your margin and relationship channel.

Conclusion

Knowing whether selling on Mercado Libre is profitable requires doing the math product by product. And even when it comes out positive, depending on a single channel that sets the rules and charges for every repeat purchase is a business risk. The way out is not to leave, but to build your own channel alongside it, with traffic, a customer base and repeat purchases.

At We make it Lab we work with brands that depend on Mercado Libre today to build that complete own channel: online store, Google and Meta ads, email, WhatsApp and CRM. Frequently asked questions

  • Should I stop selling on Mercado Libre? In general, no. For most brands it is a source of sales and visibility that is hard to replace. What makes sense is to stop depending only on it, adding your own channel that offsets the commission with repeat purchases and margin.
  • Can I include my store link on Mercado Libre? No. The listing policies forbid links to sales sites outside the platform and any contact information. Your own channel is built by winning customers through your own channels.
